ProTec Quality System*

ProTec’s quality framework leverages the established certifications and processes of our manufacturing partners while maintaining oversight at critical stages. Our global network of suppliers operates under their own quality management systems—many holding ISO 9001 or industry-specific certifications. ProTec’s Quality System is a comprehensive framework designed to ensure friction materials and brake components consistently meet customer design specifications and cost requirements while maintaining the highest standards of reliability and performance.

Our in-house engineering team, with decades of combined experience in friction design, manufacturing, and quality, conduct specification reviews and work closely with manufacturers to ensure products meet customer requirements. This engineering oversight on every project provides both technical rigor and conformity for the final product.

This distributed model allows us to match each project with manufacturing partners who have proven quality systems for that specific application, whether on-road or off-road friction products, industrial equipment components, or robotics applications.

1. Design Input & Requirements Management

  • Customer Requirement Capture: Systematic documentation of technical specifications, performance criteria, material requirements, and cost targets.
  • Design Review Process: Cross-functional evaluation of customer requirements against manufacturing capabilities and material science constraints.
  • Feasibility Analysis: Assessment of design requirements against available materials and processes.
  • Cost-to-Requirement Alignment: Early analysis ensuring design specifications align with customer budget parameters.

2. Material Specification & Control

  • Raw Material Standards: Documented specifications for all base materials and friction compounds.
  • Supplier Qualification: Approved supplier list with quality agreements and material certifications.
  • Incoming Inspection: Verification testing of raw materials against specifications.
  • Material Traceability: Lot tracking from receipt through finished product.

3. Process Validation & Control

  • Manufacturing Process Documentation: Standard operating procedures (SOPs) for bonding, sintering, machining, and assembly operations.
  • First Article Inspection (FAI): Complete dimensional and performance verification of initial production runs.
  • In-Process Controls: Critical control points monitored during production (temperatures, pressures, cure times, dimensions).
  • Statistical Process Control (SPC): Key process parameters tracked to ensure consistency and detect trends.

4. Product Verification & Validation

Verification (meeting specifications):

  • Dimensional inspection per customer drawings.
  • Material composition analysis.
  • Visual inspection criteria.
  • Hardness and density measurements.

Validation (fitness for intended use):

  • Performance testing (friction coefficient, wear rate, temperature resistance).
  • Durability testing under simulated operating conditions.
  • Application-specific validation for critical industries (robotics, railroad, medical, racing).
  • Customer approval testing when required.

  • Quality Records: Inspection reports, test data, material certifications.
  • Production Travelers: Job-specific documentation following each order through production.
  • Certificate of Conformance (C of C): Provided with shipments documenting compliance.
  • Non-Conformance Records: Documentation of any deviations and corrective actions.
  • Traceability Matrix: Linking materials, processes, and inspections to specific customer orders.

6. Calibration & Measurement System

  • Equipment Calibration: Regular calibration of measuring instruments traceable to NIST standards.
  • Gage R&R Studies: Validation that measurement systems are capable and repeatable.
  • Test Equipment Maintenance: Scheduled maintenance and verification of testing apparatus.

7. Continuous Improvement

  • Corrective Action/Preventive Action (CAPA): Systematic response to quality issues with root cause analysis.
  • Customer Feedback Integration: Regular review of customer concerns and suggestions.
  • Internal Audits: Periodic assessment of quality system effectiveness.
  • Metrics & KPIs: Tracking quality performance (defect rates, on-time delivery, customer satisfaction).

8. Training & Competency

  • Operator Training: Documented training for critical processes.
  • Quality Awareness: Employee understanding of quality standards and their role.
  • Cross-Training: Capability development across multiple functions.

9. Change Management

  • Engineering Change Orders (ECO): Formal process for managing design or process changes.
  • Customer Approval: Required authorization for any specification changes.
  • Implementation Validation: Verification that changes achieve intended results without negative impacts.

10. Risk Management

  • FMEA (Failure Mode Effects Analysis): Proactive identification of potential failure modes in design and manufacturing.
  • Risk Mitigation Plans: Actions to reduce likelihood or impact of identified risks.
  • Critical Application Focus: Enhanced controls for safety-critical applications (on-road, off-road, railroad braking, and robotics).

Quality System Documentation Hierarchy

  • Quality Manual: Overall policy and commitment to quality.
  • Procedures: Detailed instructions for key processes.
  • Work Instructions: Step-by-step operator guidance.
  • Forms & Records: Documentation proving compliance.

Industry-Specific Considerations
