High speed stamping press operations push brake and clutch components to their absolute limits. As manufacturing equipment has evolved toward faster cycle speeds and heavier workloads, the friction materials that power clutch-brake systems have struggled to keep pace. The gap between what conventional friction materials could deliver and what modern high-performance stamping equipment actually required became a significant engineering challenge for OEM manufacturers and their customers alike, driving demand for a new class of friction material capable of meeting the performance expectations of the next generation of industrial equipment.

Goizper is a world-leading supplier of brake clutch combinations for heavy duty manufacturing equipment, with deep expertise in stamping presses, metalworking machinery, and can bodymakers. As Goizper’s customers began building faster and heavier equipment to meet their own production demands, it became clear that the conventional friction materials available in the market were not able to keep up with the increased performance requirements these machines placed on clutch-brake systems. Higher cycle speeds generate more heat, more mechanical shock loading, and more cumulative wear than slower equipment, and friction materials that performed adequately in previous generations of machinery were reaching the boundaries of their capability in the newer, more aggressive applications. Goizper recognized that solving this problem required a fundamentally better friction material rather than incremental improvements to existing compounds.

After an extensive program of research, development, and rigorous application testing, TF1600 was selected as the friction material capable of meeting the demands of Goizper’s most challenging applications. TF1600 is a uniquely formulated material with an exceptionally high Kevlar content of eighty percent, making it one of the most Kevlar-intensive friction materials available for industrial clutch and brake applications. Kevlar aramid fiber provides an outstanding combination of tensile strength, thermal resistance, and low abrasive wear that allows TF1600 to maintain consistent friction performance under the high temperatures, high pressures, and rapid engagement cycles that high-speed stamping and bodymaker equipment generates during continuous production operation. The high Kevlar content also contributes to the material’s ability to deliver smooth, controlled engagement behavior, which is critical in precision manufacturing applications where abrupt or inconsistent clutch engagement can affect part quality and press timing.

The performance results achieved with TF1600 in Goizper’s clutch-brake systems have been exceptional by any measure. Stamping equipment equipped with Goizper clutch-brakes running TF1600 friction material demonstrated the ability to operate at two and a half times higher throughput compared to equipment using conventional friction materials, a transformative improvement in production capacity that directly impacts the economics of can manufacturing and metalworking operations. Beyond the throughput gains, the service life of the clutch itself was extended by four to six times compared to previous friction material solutions. In practical terms this meant that when one customer increased cycle speeds to take advantage of TF1600’s performance capabilities, driving throughput higher than before, the clutch assembly still maintained a similarly dramatic multiple of service life improvement over the baseline. Longer clutch life means fewer planned maintenance intervals, less unplanned downtime, lower replacement parts costs, and higher overall equipment availability, all of which contribute meaningfully to the total value delivered to the end user.

Based on these results, Goizper clutch-brakes and flywheel assemblies featuring TF1600 friction material are now standard OEM equipment on all Standun B6, B7, and Ragsdale bodymakers. Goizper clutch-brakes are also the preferred retrofit solution for Standun B2, B3, and B5 rebuilds, bringing the performance benefits of TF1600 to existing equipment in the field and allowing manufacturers to upgrade their installed base without full machine replacement. The combination of Goizper’s engineering expertise in heavy duty clutch-brake design and TF1600’s proven friction material performance has established a benchmark for high speed stamping and can manufacturing applications that conventional friction material solutions simply cannot match.
